Applying to the Graduate Program

Ph.D. Applications  (For MA Applications see below)

Application deadline: The first deadline to apply to the PhD program for fall admission is the first Friday in January. Applications will be
reviewed intermittently after the initial deadline.

Applicants must complete an online application, pay the $75 application fee and upload the following documents:
1.  Curriculum vitae (resume)
2.  Personal statement, (1 or 2 page)
3.  Academic writing sample (10 – 15 pages)
4.  Three referenced letters,
(upon submitting your application for formal review your referee’s
will be contacted via the email address you provide in your
application).
5.  Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded to your application
(official transcripts from each college or university attended will be
due upon admission).
6.  GRE scores (Institution Code:  2925)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  NOTE: if your other application materials are deemed strong enough to warrant admission, the Admissions Committee may waive this requirement at its sole discretion if you make a case for it.
7.  International students must also provide a financial disclosure and TOEFL scores.

MA Applications

Application deadline: None. Completed applications will be reviewed and admissions made on a rolling basis. However, the deadline for applying for our first review is the first Friday in February. The earlier you submit your application the better chance you will have to be considered for Fellowship money if available.

M.A. applicants must complete an online application, pay the application fee and provide the following:

5.  Your unofficial transcripts from each college or university attended
(Official transcripts will be required upon admission).
6.  International students must also provide a financial disclosure and TOEFL scores.

NOTE: GRE Scores are not required for the Master’s program.

The Master’s in American Studies normally takes 3-4 semesters of full-time graduate study to complete, and must be conferred within 4 years of entering the
program (unless the Graduate School approves the student’s petition for an extension of the time limit).
