International Applicants

Ph.D. Applications

Application deadline: The first deadline to apply to the PhD program for fall admission is the first Friday in January. Applications will be
reviewed intermittently after the initial deadline.

Applicants must complete an online application, pay the $75 application fee and upload the following documents:

  1. Curriculum vitae (resume)
  2. Personal statement, (1 or 2 page)
  3. Academic writing sample (10 – 15 pages)
  4. Three referenced letters, (upon submitting your application for formal review your referee’s will be contacted via the email address you provide in your application).
  5. Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded to your application, (official transcripts from each college or university attended will be due upon admission).
  6. GRE scores (Institution Code:  2925, Department Code:  2206);
  7. Official copy of TOEFL scores. Have the testing service mail official scores directly to The Department of Transnational Studies. NOTE: The University’s minimum scores on the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based (PBT) test or 213 for the computer-based (CBT) test. The TOEFL score must be dated within two years of the time the application is reviewed by International Admissions in GrAdMIT. The University’s minimum score for the TOEFL (iBT) is 79. UB does not currently require minimum cut-off scores for the four individual subsections. Though there is no required minimum section score, most accepted students are expected to achieve the following section scores: Reading: 19/30 Listening: 15/30 Speaking: 19/30 Writing: 19/30.
  8. A certified copy of the International Applicant Financial Statement (with applicable supporting documents and signatures) must be uploaded to your application showing at least enough funds in U.S. currency for one academic year.

MA Applications

Application deadline: None. Completed applications will be reviewed and admissions made on a rolling basis. However, the deadline for applying for our first review is the first Friday in February. The earlier you submit your application the
better chance you will have to be considered for Fellowship money.

M.A. applicants must complete an online application, pay the application fee and provide the following:

  5. Your unofficial transcripts from each college or university attended (Official transcripts will be required upon admission).
